In recent races, Danilo Petrucci has proved fast, but has been missing that little something needed to fight for a top three spot. This was again the case at Brno; consistently part of the leading group, he was unable to fight for the podium.
“The race went quite well in the end, I finished just 3 seconds from the winner, which is positive but there were too many riders in between us. So on the one hand I'm pleased, but on the other hand I finished in 6th place. I was lacking the traction needed to make passes”.
In the Czech Republic, on Monday, he also tried a new riding position on the Ducati.
“I think it can help me at the Red Bull Ring, where we have some hard braking areas and I, due to my weight, need to able to stop the bike better. This isn't one of my favourite tracks if I'm honest, but I know that it is a good one for Ducati. I think that if I can be strong here, I can be strong at every track”.
Last year, Danilo started from the second row, but a technical problem prevented him from crossing the line.
“It will be important to qualify well again, because we'll have to manage the tyres during the race and the weather is uncertain too. My aim is to stick as close as I can to the two factory Ducatis, but it won't be easy. Dovizioso won here last year and I know Lorenzo is really keen after the Brno test, I think he'll be one of the most dangerous riders".
Petrucci has pointed out how strategy will play a fundamental role and, in recent races, riders seem more focused on conserving the tyres rather than being fast.
“Historically, Assen, Sachsenring and Brno were three races where we'd see low temperatures, while this year we're seeing record heat, this has had a bearing. It's true that tyre management is more important than in the past, but in the race we continue to be fast. You can never relax and it all becomes even more difficult, in these conditions you need to be even stronger technically.”.
