The Assen round left a bit of a bitter taste in Jorge Lorenzo’s mouth. Indeed, because the Majorcan duelled with the best but then in the finale was forced to yield. So in Germany he is dreaming of getting back to playing the part of a protagonist, but it won’t be that simple.
“There are easy and difficult tracks on the calendar – Jorge began – The Sachsenring is one of the complicated ones. Last year we struggled, so it will be interesting to see how to improve the bike. In 2017 we lost about three tenths, so if we can cut the gap in half, we could battle with the fastest.”
The German track definitely smiles on Márquez, and Lorenzo makes no bones about it.
“The Honda is a much shorter bike than the Ducati, larger and more stable in the fast corners. That means that on the slow tracks we struggle and this track is a good example. It seems like a go kart track. However, I should point out that the GP18 is more complete and I expect a less complicated race than last year.”
At the mid-season point, there is an interesting bit of information: Lorenzo is the rider who has turned the most laps in the lead from the season start until now.
“It is not a bad sign. Obviously, I would like to take the lead on the last lap (smiling). What counts is that from Mugello I am able to be fast for several laps, wearing the tyres less. In fact, now I am more competitive in the final laps and that makes me happy. It’s a pity about Assen, since that T4 is always particular.”
The new tank has solved his difficulties.
“I think there were two problems: the first is that the Ducati has a twitchier engine than the Yamaha and the second is that this aspect demands more of an effort in braking from a physical point of view, so much that it has an impact on the ergonomics of the bike.”
The final comment had to do with Pedrosa’s future. Lorenzo was rather evasive in his reply.
“None of us can know what Dani will decide. We’ll see.”
