We left him at Mugello full of doubts and with a sad face. We find him at Montmelò calm and smiling from ear to ear. It was undoubtedly an encouraging Friday for Maverick Viñales, managing to finish FP2 with the third best time and proving to be the best Yamaha rider in the afternoon.
“I can say that I am satisfied with this Friday – the Spaniard began – We are only at the beginning, but the feelings are positive. After these two free practice sessions, I can say that we are on the right path to solve the problems we encountered in Mugello, since we figured out what didn’t work.”
Maverick therefore draws the sums.
“I worked on race settings from the start – he revealed – It wasn’t simple, because there were a few small problems with the low temperatures, but in any case I managed to improve as the moments passed.”
Attention then shifted to the tyres.
“With the front tyre, however, I must say that I struggled a lot – he admitted – whereas with the rear I managed to be competitive, finding the right grip. Performance is positive, although we can’t trust the times on Friday this year very much.”
The Barcelona track seems to bring out the qualities of the Yamaha rider.
“There are various points where you can overtake, I’d say almost all the corners – he analysed – I can reiterate that the sensations were positive, so I am enthusiastic. I also found good grip on a track that I have always liked and I must say that I was competitive on the last sector too.”
However, Viñales keeps his head down.
“My problem is the race – he reminded – I hope to have the right grip from the start, not like what happened in Mugello where I struggled in the early laps, missing out on the chance to battle for the podium. Today there was less grip than in the May tests at Montmelò, but I did not struggle.”
