The world championship finally reaches Europe and the Jerez circuit. A track that, over the years, has often seen local riders triumph, though the record man is in fact Valentino Rossi, with nine victories. Here are the stats for the first European round.
- Honda has scored 20 wins at Jerez, most recently with Dani Pedrosa, who won last year ahead of team-mate Marquez.
- Eight wins for Yamaha, the latest scored two years ago by Valentino Rossi.
- Rossi has won most often at the Spanish track, on nine occasions in fact. Seven in the reigning class, one in 125 and one in 250.
- Only just win for Ducati at Jerez, or rather that of 2006, achieved by Loris Capirossi. The red bike's last podium came just last year, when Lorenzo powered the GP17 into third place.
- Andrea Dovizioso has never won at Jerez, in fact he's never reached the podium. His best result to date is a fifth place finish.
- The fifth place scored by Aleix Espargarò in 2016 is the best ever result for Suzuki in Spain in the MotoGP championship. In the old 500 series on the other hand, Kenny Roberts JR scored a win in 2000.
- In all, Spaniards have won the race on twelve occasions in the top class. Alberto Puig in 1995, Àlex Criville in 1997, 1998 and 1999, Sete Gibernau in 2004, Dani Pedrosa in 2008, 2013 and 2017, Jorge Lorenzo in 2010, 2011 and 2015, Marc Marquez in 2014.
- In the last 14 editions, a Spaniard has always reached the podium at Jerez.
- From 2009 until now, the 2016 edition was the only one in which no local rider was able to win in any of the three categories.
- In the last six editions of the Spanish Grand Prix, there have been five different winners, or rather Casey Stoner, Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa.
- Starting from pole is essential at Jerez. In each of the last five editions, the polesitter has gone on to win the race.
