MotoGP, Marquez on the podium... like Wayne Rainey

Marc has the same number of podiums in the top class as the American, and lies behind Stoner. Honda aims for win number 750 in Argentina

MotoGP: Marquez on the podium... like Wayne Rainey

Marc Marquez has already matched Rainey and now sets Stoner in his sights. No, we haven't gone mad, we're referring to the stats regarding the riders with the most podiums in the reigning class.  With his second place finish in Qatar, the Spaniard ties with Wayne in 8th place, with 64 podiums scored to date and now, to move up another place, he must reach Casey, on 69.

If we look at the table, it's interesting to note that Marquez has scored more wins and than second/third place finishes: 35 to 29. Very few boast similar stats, namely Stoner (38 to 31), Doohan (54 to 41) and, of course, Giacomo Agostini with his 68 wins, 20 seconds and not even one third place finish.

Speaking of records, in Qatar Marquez failed by just a fraction of a second to award Honda its 750th race win. Thanks to Jorge Martin's victory in Moto3, the Japanese manufacturer has now clocked up 749 wins in the championship since 1961 (the first was scored by Tom Phillis in 125).

Honda is the most successful brand, followed at a distance by Yamaha (501 wins), Aprilia (294), MV Agusta (275) and Suzuki (156). A record that it also upholds in the reigning class, with 287 victories to the 226 of Yamaha, 139 of MV Agusta, 91 of Suzuki and 40 of Ducati.

As for the riders who have won the most with Honda, Doohan and Pedrosa tie for first place, with 54 wins apiece.
