SBK: Magic Melandri, battles Rea to win in Race 2

Phillip Island is always guaranteed to be a thrilling race. A fast track where the battles come to fractions of seconds, fought all the way to the line. If we also add the new flag to flag feature into the mix, the show is pretty much guaranteed.

Marco Melandri's star continued to shine bright in Sunday's Australian race as he stole all the attention. The Ducati rider fought tooth and nail to catch up from ninth on the grid. #33 took his time though, lucid and analytical as he prepared his final assault down to the very last detail. While Chaz Davies crashed mid-race, his team-mate remained with the leading group and Rea, who was setting the pace. The Cannibal appeared to have something more but just before the line Marco made full use of the slipstream, just inching ahead and taking the win by 0.021 of a second.

Johnny therefore had no choice but to settle for second place, which nevertheless went some way to making up for his disappointing Saturday. There was also space on the Phillip Island  podium for the Panigale of Xavi Forés, who has been dreaming of such a result for a while now. The team Barni rider closed ahead of the ZX-10RR of Tom Sykes, followed by Alex Lowes with the Yamaha and Leon Camier on the Honda. Then van der Mark, Baz, Torres and Razgatlioglu.
