MotoGP: Domenicali holds back on Dovi's renewal: “Too early to say"

2018 has already begun, on track and off. While on the one hand Ducati dreams of bringing the title back to Borgo Panigale for the first time since 2007, it also considers the matter of its riders' future. Particularly that of Andrea Dovizioso. The comments made by Paolo Ciabatti a few weeks ago did not go unnoticed, when he mentioned the difficulties regarding Andrea's contract renewal. Claudio Domenicali now touches on the same subject.

“It's only normal that when things are going well you consider continuing – begins the CEO - Andrea is definitely interested in continuing with us. Right now though, I think it's too early to decide and define everything for the following season, seeing as we haven't even completed a test yet. We have all the bases and elements that we need to find a solution though".

The rider hasn't even made any requests yet.

Andrea hasn't asked us anything. Both parties are keen, and from 2013 until now Andrea has always been treated well financially”.

One thing is certain - the Italian will want an increase in light of his recent championship results.

We need to put things in perspective of course, even though things might have been different in certain seasons. When we talk about a renewal, we need to consider a rider's performance in the present and the past. It's only right to acknowledge his value. On the other hand though, you need balance”.

Lorenzo's mega-salary for the 2017-2018 period comes to mind.

“It's true that we really pushed to have Jorge in Ducati – recalls the number one -  but he came to Borgo Panigale with five world titles under his belt. That was a temporary push. In the future, there will be more balanced management when it comes to the hiring of riders”.

As well as riders' performance, other aspects are involved when it comes to a renewal.

“I think a lot will depend on the competitiveness of the bike, and the Ducati has proved to be competitive. Andrea has done very well of course, but there's no denying Marquez's value, given that they both won the same number of races. This all means we're in a different situation compared to 2017, but when there is mutual will and respect, you can always find a good solution”.
