SBK, Marinelli: "Melandri is already ready for the title"

"To take the title Chaz just needs to be consistent, the first goal is to get through Phillip Island unscathed".

SBK: Marinelli: "Melandri is already ready for the title"

In exactly two weeks' time the curtain will go up on the 2017 Superbike season. In the Ducati camp, there are high hopes as the team prepares to take on the Kawasakis of Rea and Sykes. This confidence is clear to see on Ernesto Marinelli's face. The Superbike project director is convinced that one special ingredient is needed in order to win big.

Battle is about to commence.

“We're ready, the first event of the season draws ever closer and we're aware that we have everything we need to do well, but above all we know we've completed important work during the winter break. There's a real harmony within the tie, and I can see the conviction on our riders' faces”.

The first round takes place in Australia in two' weeks time.

“It's a unique round. If we get through it unscathed this is definitely a good starting point. Let's say that after the first races we can have a better idea of where we stand”.

During the latter part of the 2016 season, the Ducati clearly demonstrated its growth. What are you still missing?

“I think we have a particularly agile and manageable bike, particularly through the turns. We perhaps still suffer too much in terms of top speed and we'll work on this ahead of the opening race”.

You have new-entry Melandri on the team this season. During the team's presentation, Marco appeared excited and very emotional. Do you think he can already aim for the title?

“Marco is a talented rider, there's no doubt about that, his career so far says it all. He's come to Ducati because  he is extremely keen to do well and I'm sure that he can also be in the mix for the title. The road is long, but he won't hold back”.

Chaz has been called the anti Rea. What does he need to win the title?

“In recent months, we've tried to satisfy all his requests, working particularly on the aerodynamics. In 2016 perhaps he was missing a little constancy at the start, I think that's what we'll need this season. If you're aiming for the title, you can't lose points along the way”.

How far are you from Kawasaki now?

“The world championship winning bike starts as favourite of course. Perhaps they have a little more in terms of grip and speed”.
