Savadori: "The Aprilia has what it takes to stay with the top riders"

Once again, Lorenzo Savadori surprised everyone. On his second outing of the new year with the Milwaukee Aprilia, the rider from Cesena finished the activities at Portimão with the third best time behind teammate, Eugene Laverty. The Italian therefore confirms his improvement in view of next month’s event scheduled at Phillip Island.

Which is greater – the disappointment at Laverty beating you or the satisfaction with your third place time?

“It’s hard to say (he smiles). All joking aside, I am satisfied with my performance because in these days we were able to improve in various aspects and in the end, the times are quite encouraging. At the end, I used the qualifying tyre and that let me get close to the front runners.”

What work did you do over the weekend?

“We mainly did some long runs, trying to work on race strategy. As I said on several occasions, I just need to lap as much as possible, gaining more and more familiarity with the bike. We are taking full advantage of all these opportunities.”

What is the aspect of the bike that encourages you?

“Certainly the power. I think that the Aprilia can count on a great engine, plus it is precise. Maybe we need to work more on the long distances. That is where we are lacking.”

How much self-awareness does this third place time give you?

“We need to stay calm and keep our feet firmly on the ground. The bike is definitely competitive and I am confident that we can stay with the other top riders in the top positions. We need to keep working and growing.”

Some time ago, you said that you had to go back to school with Milwaukee.

“Speaking in English all day is not so simple, but I am getting used to it. There is great harmony within the team and we are really lacking for nothing.”

Portimão will come up again on the calendar. As a track, do you like it?

It is very physical and demanding, one of those tracks that I like.”

Now you are headed for Australia, where the season will begin. What will be the first step to take?

“Continuing to get miles in. This is the key to our work, because then the steps forward will come naturally. Unfortunately, I do not know Phillip Island well, so I will have to learn it, despite my experience a year ago.”

Have you thought about finishing ahead of Davies?

“We were close (he laughs). All joking aside, we need to stay focused on ourselves, continuing down the path we have taken.”
