Only Rea is faster than Savadori

One confirmation and one surprise. Jonathan Rea again proved to be the man to beat. Despite a terrifying crash during the afternoon, the Northern Irishman sets the fastest time on the second day of testing at Jerez, with a best of 1’39”809, one second slower than the extraordinary lap he put in last November, even quicker than Rossi's pole time. This time he didn't use the super-soft tyre though, unlike last time around.

Close behind him is Lorenzo Savadori. The Milwaukee rider surprised everyone, closing a little over one tenth behind Rea (+0.111). They were the only riders to duck under 1’1’40, while Tom Sykes comes in third. The Englishman is almost half a second off Rea's pace (+0.410).  Following just 0.094 of a second behind him is Marco Melandri. A positive two-day session for the Italian who is increasingly competitive on the Borgo Panigale bike. His knee injury, resulting from a football incident, seems to be a distant memory.

Chaz Davies also closes inside the top five, 0.011 behind Melandri. The Welshman precedes Nicky Hayden, who has taken a solid step forward with the Honda, though still seventh tenths from the front (+0.739). Behind him is Alex Lowes on the Yamaha and the Ducati of Xavi Forés, ahead of the other Fireblade of Stefan Bradl. It's close though, with eight riders within one second of each other. Van der Mark is also in the top ten, ahead of rookie Randy Krummenacher.

In terms of the Stock, Michael Rinaldi is the best of the day, setting a time of 1’43”343, Khairuddin again leads the way in Supersport. With these two days now completed, teams move on to Portimao, for the second test of 2017, taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
