In the 2016 Osservatorio Social Vip (VIP Social Media Observatory) rankings, Valentino Rossi remains in the lead, the only sports figure able to compete with the supremacy of the football world.

“The Doctor reconfirms his first place on Facebook and Twitter” – reveals Stefano Chiarazzo of the Osservatorio Social Vipbut he has lost ground on Instagram where Mario Balotelli is still in the lead ahead of an increasingly followed Andrea Pirlo.

With 1.1 million new fans, Rossi has exceeded 13 million Facebook followers. There is no big news behind him, with Balotelli, Pirlo and Stephan El Shaarawy ranking from second to fourth place. Gianluigi Buffon, on the other hand, snags 5th place from Alessandro Del Piero (former Juventus captain, now a commentator for Sky Sport), who is still ahead of Carlo Ancelotti, Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio.

On Facebook, ahead of Andrea Iannone (21st) is still Marco Simoncelli (15th), proving the love that lives on for the late rider from Coriano. Farther down the list are Antonio Cairoli (24th) and Andrea Dovizioso (26th).

Is it possible that these three are more popular than the ‘divine’ Federica Pellegrini, relegated to 50th place? It is possible, but only on Facebook.

On Twitter, it is Valentino Rossi in the lead once again, now with 4.7 million (+700 thousand) followers. The second rider in the rankings is Dovizioso, 20th whereas – surprise! – an illustrious former rider appears, Max Biaggi, 24th ahead of Marco Melandri (37th) and Iannone (41st).

Valentino Rossi yields the crown, however, on Instagram, where Mario Balotelli continues to hold the reins, still in the lead with 4.6 million followers. Rossi is on the third step of the podium and the second rider on the list is Andrea Iannone, 22nd, followed by Dovizioso (28th) and Cairoli (30th).
