In the Honda camp, the spotlight was on Marc Marquez, but the true protagonist on Saturday was Dani Pedrosa. On his last available try, the Spaniard managed to snatch the pole at Sepang, making this his third start of the season from the first spot on the grid.
“Obviously I am very excited about this – Dani began – My lap times were very low from the start because of the track conditions. I must say that there are a lot of fast riders – he continued – In fact, the gaps are very close. Lapping by myself let me be competitive and find my rhythm.”
The Honda rider’s thoughts have already turned to tomorrow.
“It is hard to tell what the weather conditions will be – he warned – I was able to try several tyres, so I will need to assess them in view of the race. This is one of the most demanding tracks in the Championship season – he analysed – so the bike settings will play a determining role.”
Then the rider’s attention turned back to the tyres.
“Tyre choice will be fundamental – he emphasised – with the slicks we have more grip, whereas in the wet I am still struggling too much, like what happened yesterday. So it will be important to make the right prediction, it’s a gamble.”
Pedrosa has no intention of underestimating anyone.
“The level of our rivals is very high this time – he pointed out – but I must say that the track conditions today also favour me. There are several ways to tackle the race, depending on strategy and it will be interesting.”
His final comment has to do with the heat that the riders are forced to handle.
“To be honest, there is no perfect solution – he concluded – We need to stay hydrated and eat well. Obviously, when you are on the bike there are a lot of variables like overheating and the exhaust temperature.”
