MotoGP, Michelin: Sepang, an important GP for the future

Manager Piero Taramasso: "it will allow us to test the performance of our tyres in extreme conditions"

MotoGP: Michelin: Sepang, an important GP for the future

Very high temperatures, humidity and a particularly abrasive track that often exceeds 50°C: Sepang is hell for the tyres. Michelin is well aware and has prepared very carefully for this final event making up the Far East triple-header.

In 2016, the track was resurfaced and the French manufacturer has made good use of data collated last year and during winter testing.  The MotoGP riders will be able to use the usual three compounds (soft, medium and hard) with an asymmetric construction at both front and rear, with a harder right side considering that 10 of the 15 corners turn in that direction.

Rain often makes an appearance during the Malaysian GP and Michelin will bring rain tyres in a soft and medium compound with a symmetrical construction at both the front and rear.

Sepang is the penultimate race of the year and the final of the three fly-away races. It is always an event that requires particular attention as it can be really hot and the surface is very abrasive, so we need to supply tyres that work in these extreme conditions - comments two-wheel Manager Piero Taramasso - It was re-surfaced in 2016, so we have the information from last year’s event and the pre-season test to work with and that data has enabled us to produce the best tyres for the Malaysian circuit.  We are constantly learning at each track and at every race to produce the best tyres. Sepang is one of the events that we get the opportunity to see how the tyres perform at the very highest temperatures, so it is an extremely important race for us on our evolution scale.”
