Ducati is looking down on the rest in Motegi, and among the key players in all this could be none other than Gigi Dall’Igna. The engineer from Borgo Panigale suffered along with everyone else in the garage during the long duel between Dovizioso and Marquez, then indulging in the celebrations for a victory that was as fiercely fought as it is important in the hierarchies of this wide open championship. “Now I’m fine, but during the race the tension was very high – Dall’Igna recounts – and Dovi really pulled off a masterpiece. It would have been difficult to do any better in terms of intelligence, ferocity and courage; he put all of the qualities needed to win into play. I have been positive throughout and in the end I was right (he laughs).

His thoughts now turn to Australia, but not only there, since the third and last round of the triple-header is Malaysia, a friendly track for Ducati.

“Now we need to think about Philip Island, where I am convinced that with these tools we can do well. Is Ducati the best bike in the category? I prefer to think that we still need to make up ground because that is the best way to take on the coming races and to continue improving.”

Improvements that could also come from the work done by Michele Pirro during the latest tests in Valencia.

Michele worked primarily in view of 2018, so not on fine-tuning the current bike. In any case, now it’s time to celebrate, because a win should always be celebrated.”

Moving for a moment to the other side of the garage, Jorge Lorenzo rode a race that was difficult to interpret with an excellent start followed by a rough middle part and an improving finale.

“I think Lorenzo fell apart a bit when he was overtaken somewhat aggressively by Zarco. Right now, he still struggles with things like that and he needs to find a way to overcome this problem.”
