MotoGP: Marquez: Taking risks today made no sense

The spoils of Friday were divided between Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa. In the morning, the number 93 Honda rider outshone everyone, whereas in the afternoon he preferred settling for the fourth best time. In fact, in these mixed conditions, it was pointless to chase the clock and the five-time world champion was well aware of that.

To be honest, today it was important to find confidence in the bike, rather than to risk – number 93 pointed out – It would have been complicated to gather information, especially in view of Sunday, since the track should be dry for the race. Precisely for this reason, I avoided pushing to the limit.”

Marc then glosses over the sessions, talking about the tyre that Michelin re-introduced at Mugello, namely the famous 70 front tyre.

We changed the tyres and there were fewer accidents – he reminded – Ducati took an important step forward, but so did we, despite the little time we had available. Since the Brno tests, the situation has seemed clearer to me – he revealed – In fact, now we are able to be fast on every track, no matter what the layout is.”

In Aragón the Spaniard certainly wants to aim for confirmation of his Misano performance. Tomorrow will be an important day not to make mistakes.

“I have always felt competitive in these conditions – Marc stated – I feel good and FP3 will become a qualifying session for all intents and purposes, so we will need to get the tyre choice right too.”

One of the issues of the day is also carbon discs, to which Marquez gave the first victory in the premier class two weeks ago.

I used them in Malaysia last year too – he reminded – These discs are very sensitive. Braking is deep and sometimes it isn’t consistent since the sensations are different on the corners.”

Despite his fourth time in the afternoon, the Honda rider is not concerned in the least.

Dovizioso didn’t risk either – Marc concluded – There is no sense risking when you are battling for the Championship, much less rely on slicks in the final moments.”

Pedrosa gets something off his chest: “The performance today in the wet shows that the result in Misano was not my fault.”

As we already mentioned, the Motorland Friday let us see a much different Dani Pedrosa than the one at Misano. In fact, in the afternoon, the Spaniard rode his Honda to the top spot.

Today was a strange day – Dani began – In any case, I am satisfied with the performance, although being competitive tomorrow in FP3 will be fundamental. Among other things, no rain is expected in the coming days, so a lot will change.”

The Honda rider then goes back to his performance in Misano.

“As you could see today, the difficulties in Misano were neither my fault, nor the technicians’ – he pointed out – Unfortunately, it depended on the tyre that proved to perform poorly.”
