It didn’t seem like it would be a weekend full of satisfaction for Aleix Espargaró, but after qualifying today, the smile on the Spaniard’s face definitely began to make headway. “We made an excellent step forward from yesterday – number 41 explains – and we were much faster. In qualifying I risked it all, but on my flying lap I lost the front end completely on turn eleven, risking a crash on one of the most dangerous corners of the calendar, so I lost a few fundamental tenths for my time. The overall level this weekend is really high. We cannot be entirely happy with a ninth place, but I am confident since we are all close.”

The Spaniard’s progress has been significant, also in terms of race pace.

“In the first part of FP4 I was fast on used tyres, especially the soft solution, whereas I did not feel particularly good with the hard tyres. I think I have a good pace thanks to the progress made yesterday. It’s a shame that we will probably not have the chance to demonstrate it tomorrow.”

Indeed, because tomorrow it seems that the rain will actually arrive on the track named for Marco Simoncelli, something that does not make Aleix at all happy.

“I hope that at least we will be able to do some testing during the warm up. It could be fun for you, but not for us, because the track surface does not have much grip and I would not want to race on it in the wet, but we’ll have to do it. It’s a shame, because on a dry track we could have aimed for the top eight, but with the rain coming, it could also be a chance to gain a few more positions.”
