Morbidelli: "Third place? A missed opportunity. There are races where you shouldn't settle but win, and Silverstone was one of those"

Moto2: Pasini: one more lap and I could have won

Mattia Pasini only just missed out on reaching the top step of the podium at the Silverstone race. Despite an uphill start, the Italian stood out over race distance, hunting down his rivals and capturing them one by one. In the final stages, he attempted to take Nakagami, but the seven tenths of a second separating the pair proved too much to reduce.

The strategy was to try and win, but it wasn't enough – said the Italtrans rider - I think it was a good race, especially the second part, as I was able to be competitive, and had the right confidence with the bike”.

Pasini was forced to play catch-up at Silverstone.

It was a real shame about the early laps – he said – at the start, the bike was wheelieing, then I lost more than two seconds, Marquez  also did well cutting across me. I knew I could be fast in the second half of the race though – he continued – so I was patient and saw that I could take the other riders. I could have taken Nakagami too, but I needed one more lap (he smiles)”.

The rider is now sixth in the standings, but he has big ambitions, despite keeping his feet on the ground.

Fighting for third in the championship would be great, but we have to work race by race, as there's still a long way to go. A pity about the start of the season, where we had too many zeros”.

In an interesting aside, Pasini explains the reason why his dad calls him 'Bacarospo', which means 'you little...!'.

“Our family is like the Simpsons – he revealed - my dad is Homer, while I'm Bart, my sister Lisa. We even dressed up like them once”.

In the UK, two Italian flags shone in Moto 2. As well as Pasini, we can't forget Franco Morbidelli. As the race got underway, it looked like he might score yet another win, but things didn't go to plan.

“Silverstone was a missed opportunity for me – commented the Marc VDS rider - because in the early laps I was fast and able to break away, I could have won the race”.

Then something went wrong.

After Alex's crash, I couldn't get back into the rhythm – he continued - but I'm pleased with the result anyway, and the points scored compared to Luthi”.

There is some disappointment on Morbidelli's face though.

“I wanted to win here too, third isn't the result I was hoping for – he revealed - in this championship there are times where you have to settle and those where you have to attack, Silverstone was a race in which we should have gained”.

Now attention turns to Misano.

I've been feeling the pressure for that race since January (he smiles)– he concluded – our fans will be there, I'll give it my all".
