A fourth place in qualifying is certainly not a result to celebrate for Maverick Viñales, “It is logical, you always want more”, but it is nothing to sneeze at either, “I am rather satisfied.” The Spaniard says this because he is well aware that he finished on the second row because of a few wrong decisions with bike changes.

In FP4 I had done well. I had good sensations in the saddle and it was important - he points out - But before qualifying, we decided to try a few changes on the bike and they didn’t work. To the contrary, my M1 got worse compared to the last free practice session.”

Logic would lead to believe that backtracking a step should be enough to solve the problem.

Indeed, but it was a pity because I think that I would have been able to battle for pole position - Viñales says regretfully - On the other hand, I think that I have a good pace which will let me stay with the best in the race, at least for the first part of the race.

The problem, on an identical bike, is the same as Valentino’s: rear tyre wear.

The primary objective is to limit tyre wear and not to have a repeat of what happened in Austria - he says - In this sense, the right tyre choice will also be very important and I think that I will have a look at what the Tech3 riders are going to do. They are usually quite good with these decisions.

Times and concerns aside, Viñales seems to have found a bit of serenity.

My goal is to always stay calm, even when things are not going the right way. For the moment, I am succeeding” he concludes with a laugh.
