MotoGP: At Silverstone Ducati has a myth to dispel

The World Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing Championship is ready to get back on the track after the Red Bull Ring round. In fact, this weekend, Silverstone will be in the spotlight for the twelfth round of the season.

This is a track where Ducati has never won. In fact, the last success for the Reds in Great Britain dates back to 2008, when the Grand Prix was held at Donington. On that occasion it was Stoner who brought home the victory.

- 2017 will be the eighth season with Silverstone hosting a GP since the championship’s return to the track in 2010 after a 23-year absence.

- The first GP that was held at Silverstone in 1977 was also the first one held in England. Before that, the TT was raced on the Isle of Man. The winners were: in 500 – Pat Hennen (Suzuki), in 350cc and 250cc – Kork Ballington (Yamaha), in 125cc - Pierluigi Conforti (Morbidelli).

- The Silverstone GP was organised until 1987, after which the move was made to Donington Park.

- The riders with the most wins are Kork Ballington and Angel Nieto, three on six occasions.

- The only three riders who have taken more than one win on the British track since its return to MotoGP are Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Maverick Viñales.

- Lorenzo has won three times in the premier class: 2010, 2012 and 2013; Marquez once in 125cc in 2010 and once in MotoGP in 2014. And then there is Viñales who won in Moto3 in 2012 and in the premier class last season.

- Cal Crutchlow finished on the podium last year, breaking a dry spell that had lasted since 1984 with Ron Haslam’s third place in in 500, whereas the last podium for an English rider in his home race was Jeremy McWilliams’ third place in the half litre at Donington in 2000.

- Yamaha has won four of the seven MotoGP races at Silverstone. The most recent triumph was the Doctor’s two seasons ago, whereas Honda has two wins on their record, one brought home by Marquez in 2014 and one by Stoner in 2011.

- Last year at Silverstone, Viñales gave Suzuki their first premier class win since Chris Vermeulen’s in France in 2007. It was their first win on English soil since Franco Uncini’s 1982 victory in 500cc.

- The only podium for Ducati dates back to 2015 and it was a double, with Danilo Petrucci finishing second and Andrea Dovizioso third.

- For Alvaro Bautista, the English race will be his two hundred fiftieth.
