MotoGP, Lorenzo: Today I had what I needed to win

MotoGP: Lorenzo: Today I had what I needed to win

The way the race was shaping up at the start, Jorge Lorenzo was dreaming of the big prize in Brno. The Spaniard had taken the lead straight away on the first corner, quite at ease in the wet conditions. Then, during the bike change, his ambitions went up in smoke when his second GP17 was not ready yet and that is where he lost most of the time.

He was sorely disappointed at the end of the race.

I am very disappointed, because we had what we needed to win this race. Instead, things did not go right. At the start, I felt fast with the water – he revealed – as I had on Friday morning during FP1. Then the track dried out very quickly and I went into pit lane.”

His race was decided at that moment.

“I got the signal on the dashboard to come in, since Marquez was the fastest on the track and the team decided to call me in. Unfortunately, the second bike was not ready yet – he recalled – The team took a risk, miscalculating the re-entry time.”

Lorenzo remembers what happened well.

At that moment, the mechanics were still working on the GP17 and I left the garage with settings half for dry and half for wet. From there on, I struggled for the whole race.”

The flag-to-flag just doesn’t agree with him.

“We are not in Formula 1 here, but MotoGP – the Majorcan pointed out – There is a different mentality. In fact, I think that the bike change is even risky. Today we saw what happened in front of the garages with Iannone and Aleix Espargaró because of the many bikes and the traffic.”

So an alternative solution needs to be found.

I talked about this in safety commission – he commented – some riders are fine with flag-to-flag, whereas others are not. The race could perhaps be restarted with a second start.”

Lorenzo then talks about how competitive Marquez is at the bike change.

Marc is a rider who gains confidence straight away, whereas I need a bit more time to be fast immediately. I am really disappointed about this Sunday, since in the wet the bike was competitive and I had outstanding sensations.”
