MotoGP, Iannone: Better to fall at 300 Km/h, instead of how I did today

"Aleix is not to blame, if anyone, the mechanic who was holding his bike". Tension in the Suzuki garage because of the mistakes made

MotoGP: Iannone: Better to fall at 300 Km/h, instead of how I did today

Andrea Iannone’s weekend in Brno was a tormented one. Besides the difficulties having to do with his Suzuki and the final result, the Italian risked big during the flag-to-flag bike change. In fact, the Maniac fell to the ground in pit lane after contact with Aleix Espargaró, who was heading back onto the track at that moment.

And to think that he was just outside the top ten at the start.

“I made an incredible start – he recalled – because from twenty-first I made it all the way to thirteenth. Then I came back to the garage straight away because of a personal choice and then there was the accident.”

We noticed that you made contact with Aleix.

I don’t think he was to blame –Iannone commented – The mechanic who was holding his bike should have signalled to him not to move. In fact, the rule says that the rider entering pit lane has right of way, so his mechanic should have checked who was coming in – he advised – We have talked about these things in safety commission.”

A fall that had an impact on the Suzuki rider.

Unfortunately, my bike ended up on top of Rins’ bike and I also hurt my leg and hip. I think it is better to crash at 300 km/h, instead of how I did today. I also ended up on the ground because of the slippery yellow line.”

As if that were not enough, the guys in the garage were not exactly impeccable. A second mistake by the team, after mounting a used slick yesterday.

“On the second bike there was a slick up front and a rain on the rear – he recalled – so I was forced to wait until the bike was sorted. I lost a ton of time with all that, at a complete halt for about one minute.”

Iannone has a bitter taste in his mouth, but he has no intention of giving up.

I think that Davide Brivio is a skilled team manager, especially in managing situations – he commented – We also have a great relationship with the Japanese. What I care about is becoming competitive as soon as possible.”

Getting back to the bike change, Iannone explains what the difficulties were for the other riders compared with Marquez.

“In a flag-to-flag race, you start with the wet tyre and then you have the dry tyres in the garage. Today, the fact that the track was not particularly wet had an impact and then it dried off quickly, so it was not easy to choose the right moment.”
