In the Moto2 combined free practice results, only Alex Marquez was able to do more than the Italian band, while in qualifying nothing could stop an Italian from finishing on top. The poleman is one Mattia Pasini, setting his best of 2’02”611 early on to secure the pole, a result that Mattia hasn't enjoyed since 2007. “I'm pleased with pole and the fact that the bike is working well in all conditions. This morning, we made a change but it didn't go well and I crashed, but I knew I had a good base set-up; starting out front is very important and I hope for a dry race” – explained Mattia in parc fermé.

Alongside the Italian, separated by just 0.032 of a second, is Miguel Oliveira and the KTM, with Franco Morbidelli closing third (+0.050). It was a close run thing today, seeing as Pecco Bagnaia is 4th, just 0.075 from the front, followed by Jorge Navarro and Alex Marquez. A positive day for Luca Marini, able to achieve 7th in front of Sandro Cortese and Simone Corsi, who came into contact with Aegerter (causing the Swiss rider to crash) and crashed though fortunately without injury.

There are 16 riders within a second of each other, a sign perhaps of what tomorrow's race will bring.
