The sun continues to shine at the Laguna Seca track, allowing day one of practice to come to the best possible end on American soil. Unlike the weather though, there is a change of leadership with respect to the first session, with Jonathan Rea taking the baton.

The Northern Irish rider finishes on top with a time of 1’23”436, in a session that saw two red flags caused by a crash for Stefan Bradl and then the need to restore the proper safety conditions at that same point of the track. Second places goes to Marco Melandri (+0.342), followed by his team-mate Chaz Davies. The Welshman remains the overall quickest in the combined standings though, thanks to the 1’23”425 set in the morning.

back to the afternoon's results, a very positive session for Eugene Laverty on the Aprilia, fourth (with a crash)almost eight tenths from the front, ahead of Tom Sykes and Xavi Fores on team Barni's Ducati. Alex Lowes is almost nine tenths back in seventh place, he too crashed during the session and closes ahead of Jordi Torres on the BMW, another one who fell, right at the end of the session in the Spaniard's case.

An encouraging session for Alex De Angelis, ninth and the first rider to close more than a second from the front, while the team Ioda Aprilia of Leandro “Tati” Mercado rounds out the top ten. Raffaele De Rosa finishes outside the top ten while Lorenzo Savadori is 15th, almost two seconds from Rea.
