In the end, a few drops of rain arrived to slow the second MotoGP session. A few minutes stopped in the garage and then back on the track straight away, because there is no time to lose. In fact, rain is in the forecast for tomorrow morning, so it is important to turn a good lap to protect against being forced through Q1.

Maverick Viñales and Yamaha left nothing to chance, improving the time set by Petrucci in the morning by a second and a half and setting the bar for FP2 at 1’33”130. The Italian was seventh, on the other hand, with almost eight tenths to make up on the Spaniard. Behind the current championship leader was Jonas Folger who had an inconsequential crash this morning. The team Tech3 German is more than three tenths behind the number 25 M1, demonstrating that the gaps increased in the afternoon. In fact, only nine riders are within one second of each other.

In the afternoon at Assen, Marc Marquez took a step forward (+0.652), snatching third place with a medium tyre, just eight thousandths of a second ahead of the Ducati ridden by Andrea Dovizioso, still struggling in T3 and T4. On the other hand Jorge Lorenzo’s GP17 is still out of the top ten (14th, +1.393), with the Majorcan struggling especially in the final part of the track, just like Valentino Rossi’s Yamaha. On his final attempt, however, the Doctor managed to improve the last sector, taking sixth place behind Cal Crutchlow (+0.698).

Johann Zarco’s M1 is also in the top ten (+0.856) followed in ninth place by Bautista’s Ducati and Pedrosa’s Honda. Not making the top ten was Andrea Iannone, sixth in the morning. In the afternoon, the Italian had to reckon with bike problems that forced him to settle for the seventeenth best time (+1.487). Aleix Espargaró and his Aprilia were thirteenth (+1.361).
