Maverick Vinales 16th at the end of day one of practice at Barcelona sounds like science fiction. A totally unexpected crisis, that not even the current championship leader himself can explain.
“How am I getting on with the tyres? Just look at my results" he jokes. But it's a bitter laugh because the Spaniard didn't expect to be so far back.
“I really don't know how to explain it - he admits - I've come from Mugello where i went well, this morning my sensations with the soft tyres at the rear were good, while in the afternoon, I wasn't able to ride well with the medium. If I had pushed I would have crashed, the rear was sliding in fifth and sixth gear with new tyres”.
It's as if the Yamaha has transformed, but for the worse.
“The M1 is a very stable bike, while today it was moving all over the place - explains Maverick - I put in a new tyre and after one lap I had no grip or confidence”.
The problem is that Vinales and his team don't know how to resolve the situation.
“The bike is the same one as Mugello, I tried to use the Mugello set-up and it worse. I have no idea how to resolve the situation” he concludes.
