Many of the spotlights will be on him, as he aims to make history in front of his home crowd. At Donington, Tom Sykes is the clear favourite, having won the last four consecutive editions of the UK round. If the Kawasaki is able to win Race 1 on Saturday, he will achieve something unique, winning nine times in a row at the same track, something no-one has ever done before.
There is another milestone that #66 dreams of achieving, or rather becoming the first rider to achieve a fifth pole at Donington. The Brti is currently tied with Carl Fogarty on four. He is the only rider, of the current field, to have already started from pole at this track.
Of course the Brits don't have the slightest intention of making things easy for him. Until now, they've won 18 races and have been unbeaten at the last nine. Race 2 was won by Rea in 2012, after which all of the wins have belonged to Sykes. The last win for a non-Brit dates back to race 1 in 2012, when Marco Melandri crossed the line first.
Turning back the clock to 1998, we cannot forget that this was the inaugural Superbike championship track. Davide Tardozzi riding the Bimota and Marco Lucchinelli on the Ducati took the two wins on that day, 3 April. It is the Borgo Panigale bike to have scored the greatest number of poles in the UK, fifteen in fact, while their rivals are at nine.
