The news of Nicky Hayden’s accident was a bolt of lightning across a clear sky. The American rider has been admitted to the Cesena Hospital where he is battling for his life. On Sunday he was busy at Imola for the fifth round of Superbike astride his Honda, with which he made his return last year to the factory derivative championship.

His adventure in World Grand Prix Motorcycle racing is impossible to forget, where he won the premiere class title in 2006, making him the last American to do so. On that occasion, he snatched the sceptre from Valentino Rossi. Then he spent five years with Ducati before returning to Honda on the satellite team.

Over the past couple of hours, there have been numerous messages in support of the American with the hashtag #GoNicky from Rea and Pedrosa, as well as from Lorenzo, Simon, Rabat, Baldassarri, Rins and Alex Marquez, not to mention the teams that have benefitted from his skills – Honda and Ducati.
