Dorna considers a dedicated engine for Moto2

Moto2: Dorna considers a dedicated engine for Moto2

The Honda contract to supply Moto2 engine expires at the end of 2018. The manufacturer has equipped all the bikes since the category was born in 2010. Rumours have long been circulating about who might take the place of the Japanese manufacturer and in recent months Triumph appeared to be the favourite.

A decision has not been taken as yet. Dorna is evaluating various options, while staying faithful to the concept of a single engine, the same for everyone. One of the possible paths might be to built a specific engine for the series, rather than use a brand of existing engine.

In terms of design, Dorna would turn to Geo Technology, the Swiss engineering firm that currently prepares and maintains all of the Honda engines used in the world championship. The structure would thus create a brand new engine to supply to all teams.

For now this is just one of the ideas on the table, but it's perfectly feasible. It would also offer the advantage of allowing other manufacturers to come in as frame builders (as KTM has done this year) without "forcing them" to use a rival company's engine within the chassis.
