SBK: SSP: Mahias triumphs at Aragon

The Supersport category is not for the weak-hearted and this third round of the championship at Aragon once again proved this. The race was characterised by a number of crashes, particularly among the leading group, with several riders forced to wave goodbye to their race hopes.

In this umpteenth 'knock-out' race, it was one of the most expert riders who triumphed today, or rather Lucas Mahias. The French Yamaha rider was careful not to make mistakes, but stood out particularly for his pass at the final corner which saw him snatch the win from Sheridan Morais. Third for PJ Jacobsen, fast but in difficulty in the latter stages, while Jules Cluzel earned his first points of the season, coming home in fourth. Behind the Frenchman was the first of the Italians, young Michael Canducci, who played catch-up by setting a series of fast laps. The Italian crossed the line ahead of Christian Gamarino and Roberto Rolfo, who is still among the frontrunners in terms of the general standings. Eighth for Ryde, followed by Soomer and Stapleford.

Several big names failed to make it to the finish line, starting with Kenan Sofuoglu. The current champion found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, unable to avoid the bike of Federico Caricasulo, who crashed a moment before on exiting turn one. Yet another crash for the Italian, who is still stuck on 25 points. Niki Tuuli also crashed out while fighting near the front, as did Kyle Smith, who paid for his impetuousness, falling during the first part of the race before rejoining to reach 16th position.

Championship standings: Mahias 45 points, Rolfo 40, Morais 34.
