SBK: Davies snatches Superpole from Rea at Aragón

Johnny Rea had already begun to taste another start from the first spot on the grid. Then, just as things were getting good, it was snatched from him. In fact, Chaz Davies took it on himself to leave the Northern Irishman with a bitter taste in his mouth, winning Superpole on Saturday morning.

In his final assault, the Ducati standard-bearer put a time of 1’49”319 on the sheets, finishing 31 thousandths ahead of the defending champion. Rounding out the front row is another ZX-10R, the one ridden by Tom Sykes (+0.173). The top three are all within just over a tenth of one another and then the gap begins to widen.

Indeed, because Marco Melandri (+0.654) was more than half a second behind his teammate, finishing fourth ahead of Forés’ Panigale and Torres’ BMW, within just 50 thousandths of one another. Michael van der Mark is on the first spot of the third row astride his Yamaha with the first of the Aprilia machines nipping at his heels, the one piloted by Leandro Mercado, ahead of Eugene Laverty.

The Hondas are still far from the best. Nicky Hayden finished tenth at more than a second and a half from the leader with Stefan Bradl behind him. It was an uphill session for the German, forced to deal with a few technical problems on his Fireblade SP2. Things went even worse for Alex Lowes, who was not even able to go out on the track because of some problems that cropped up on his Yamaha to keep him in the garage. Race 1 at 1:00 PM.
