SBK: Davies: "I didn't risk. I preferred thinking about the Championship"

He may not have won, but that does not matter much. That’s right, because this first hurdle was one of those that needed to be surpassed unscathed, especially thinking back on previous seasons. Chaz Davies confirmed his performance in Race 2, finishing behind Rea again. The Englishman has begun 2017 on the right foot, despite a touch of disappointment in his expression.

I think that it was a more complicated race than yesterday, particularly in terms of tyre management, since the temperature was higher. In any case, I am satisfied, because this is a track where we have always struggled in the past, even leaving precious points behind.”

In the finale you were very close to Rea.

“Unfortunately, I was losing too much in some sections of the track and overtaking him on the straight was impossible. I am a bit disappointed, I’ll admit, but Phillip Island was not a race to risk in.”

2017 has begun differently than last year.

“This time the season is starting on a different note. We finished second here by a few thousandths and we are very close to the top in the Championship standings. I am convinced that we have a good base in view of the upcoming races. I am confident.”

Today the inverted grid made its début.

“I saw a great duel. Laverty showed that he has a great pace at the beginning, but Forés and Lowes do as well. I think that is mainly down to the track, because in the rest of the season things will be different. I’m sure, however, that there will be no lack of new contenders for the win.”

Of those who struggled, Sykes is one.

“I think it is because of the tyres. Maybe his riding style stressed the tyre too much and it wore more quickly than he expected. In any case, he also took some important points home for the title fight. Now we have a week long break and then we will need to focus on Thailand straight away.”
