MotoGP, Michelin: the tyre Big Brother arrives in 2017

Teams and spectators will know what tyres the riders use at all times. More wet weather tyres and more for riders who progress from QP1 to QP2

Michelin: the tyre Big Brother arrives in 2017

The tyres were the focus of the latest Grand Prix Commission meeting that was held last week. In fact, the last provisions of the year had to do with the tyres, introducing several changes.

The first is a completely new concept, because Michelin, in collaboration with the manufacturers, has designed a new system that will enable automatic detection of the tyres that each rider is using, making that information immediately available to all riders and teams, as well as to the TV broadcasters.

In order to do this, wireless technology will be used and the information will be fend to the unified ECU and routed to the track timing system. In other words, we will be able to tell which compound each rider is using at any given moment. This means that we can say goodbye to telling a few strategic “fibs”.

The commission also decided to address the issue of a slight disadvantage faced by riders who progressed from QP1 to QP2 and who often found themselves short on soft tyres for the final qualifying session. From next season, riders who progress from QP1 to QP2 will be able to choose an additional soft specification rear tyre. The total number of tyres available to such riders remains unchanged.

Furthermore, contrary to the statments made last week, the number of wet weather tyres available to the riders will be five front and six rear. Race Direction can still approve an additional allocation of one extra front and rear tyres when all free practice and qualifying is held in wet conditions.
