Jerez test: Rea unstoppable, even for the MotoGPs

The sun was out at Jerez and Johnny Rea's Kawasaki shone on track. The current champion dominated proceedings on Wednesday, closing with a best of 1’39”739. In the overall classification, which also featured various MotoGP teams, he lies second, just over one tenth (+0.125) from the fastest man, Hector Barbera on the Ducati (1’39”614).

It should be pointed out though that this is the Northern Irishman's third day of testing at Jerez, despite a wet start, while the MotoGP men only began later this morning. The champion left nothing to chance, confirming the potential he already showed last week at Aragon, and was the only rider to duck under 1’40. Chaz Davies, the first of the chasing pack, closed more than sixth tenths back on his Ducati (+0.670).

The Welshman continued with the work begun seven days ago, testing new material while also looking for positive sensations from the engine and chassis. The same goes for Marco Melandri, who continues to build confidence with the Panigale. The Italian had to settle for sixth place today, with a best time of 1’41”288 after making 60 laps, eight less than his team-mate.

The other Kawasaki, that of Tom Sykes, closes ahead of the Italian, finishing third after completing 49 laps, three tenths ahead of Alex Lowes on the Yamaha, who began his work at Jerez today, while Lorenzo Savadori has finished his. The Italian concludes his testing with the Milwaukee Aprilia, lying fifth, just 0.063 from the Brit's R1.

His team-mate Eugene Laverty is further back, eighth behind the MV Agusta of Leon Camier. The Irishman is followed by Michael van der Mark. The Dutch rider spent the longest time on track, covering 84 laps.

Track action resumes tomorrow morning at 10am.
