Rea takes it all! He wins Race 2 and increases the gap in the Championship standings. Sunday could not have gone any better for the Englishman who did the rain dance at the Lausitzring, dominating in the wet among the numerous crashes. This is success that takes the Brit’s overall advantage to almost 50 points over Sykes, who fell victim to a crash that compromised his race.
You redeemed a dark Saturday in the best possible way. Did you expect this?
“I think this is the most important win of my career, given the fact that, after Laguna Seca and yesterday, we had our backs up against the wall. In the morning warm up session I had the right feeling with the bike. In fact, the changes we made to the setup gave us positive results.”
The rain changed your plans, though.
“When the first drops began to fall, we were forced to change the setting entirely. I started from a position where I had a lot of ground to make up, but a lot to lose at the same time. I tried to attack, keeping my head down and staying cautious until the chequered flag.”
This win is quite a weighty one.
“It is an important win. I think that credit goes to the entire team, as they gave me a very competitive bike in the wet, particularly in terms of the setting. They worked hard, without overlooking even the smallest detail.”
The other side of the coin in the Kawasaki camp is represented by Tom Sykes. If the Brit reopened the Championship yesterday, his fall today sent the good he had done on Saturday up in smoke. In the end, number 66 had to settle for twelfth place ahead of Vizziello and a 47 point gap in the overall standings behind the lead.
In those conditions it was very easy to make a mistake.
“I think it was my mistake. Unfortunately, the bike did not have the ideal setting, plus I tried to push beyond the limit and I ended up on the ground. We need to work more on the wet setup, since in these conditions this is not the first time that we have struggled. I’m sure we can do it so that we can be more competitive and manage to win other races.”
This crash weighs as much as a millstone. Now you have 47 points to make up.
“Anything can happen in any race because the situation can change quickly. Yesterday I had 26 points, whereas today it’s already at 47, but it’s also true that three races ago that number was 71. The games are not closed yet. We still have Magny-Cours, Jerez and Doha.”
