The motocross bike and a crash are instrumental in giving Iannone a few unexpected problems. His performance on the flying lap did not suffer (2nd with more than 6 tenths ahead of third) but there is a lot of pain.
“I crashed in training, but I hadn’t felt any problems until I got on the Ducati for the first free practice session - recounts Andrea - After that accident, two of my fingers were quite swollen so I didn’t train anymore on the bike or in the gym. The guys in the Mobile Clinic are giving me a hand and it is going a bit better, but we still need to figure out what to do for the 28 laps of the race. There don’t seem to be any fractures, but we would need a CAT scan to be sure. Maybe I’ll do that after the race. Sometimes it’s better not to know...”
At least the Desmosedici works to perfection on the Red Bull Ring.
“The day was positive, just like in the tests - he says - In the morning, with the cold, I struggled because there wasn’t much grip, but we made the right changes for the afternoon. I think this is the right time to reap what is within our potential.”
Translation: we can win, even if none of the men in red will say the word.

The fast lap could have been even more so if it hadn’t been for a misunderstanding with Laverty.
“I was on my flying lap and I tried to overtake Eugene going into turn 4 - he explains - I was already half a bike length ahead, but he braked very late and I had to stand up the bike to keep from touching. When we stopped to practice starting, I told him to be more careful and he got angry. Sometimes you need to be lucid and I know I am not a master in certain situations … but this time I was.”
Andrea closes the case with a laugh. When (almost) everything is going right, morale is not easily ruined.
The rider of the Team Aspar is not agree: "in the final moments Iannone complained about me, telling me to use my head. If I was on a slow lap I would have accepted the blame, but I was on my fast lap and I don't think that his complaint was correct".
