Cold or no cold, on the Sachsenring Marc Marquez never disappoints. Today he finished in 3rd place and the impression is that he did not want to risk too much.
“The conditions were critical. I don’t ever remember racing with these temperatures – he recounts – I used the soft asymmetrical tyre on the front and first impressions were good, but at turn 11 you had to be very careful. After the crashes I took it easy there.”
The little devil knows where and how to improve.
“I am still losing a bit of time in the last sector, in acceleration from the last turn, but I think we can sort that with the setup – he says – Also, I wasn’t riding to perfection either.”
In the meantime, however, the Yamahas and the main rivals in the championship, Rossi and Lorenzo, are behind.
“Valentino is not far off: if we look at the ideal time, he is just over a couple tenths from me. I think he just made a few mistakes on the flying lap – he points out – Jorge, on the other hand, lost a bit of confidence after the crash, but tomorrow he’ll be back to being fast.”
Marc does not want to make bricks without straw for the Championship either.
“Having a 20 point advantage is good, but it is not enough – he warns – I remember what happened in 2014. I was way ahead in the standings, but I crashed at both Misano and Aragon and lost 50 points. That’s the great thing about motorcycle racing. Anything can happen down to the last race.”
At the next race he will most likely start with a small handicap, because Tuesday and Wednesday he will not participate in the tests at the Red Bull Ring like his rivals will.
“We only have two more days of testing left his year and we prefer to use them for the new bike – he explains – I would have e preferred lapping with the MotoGP bike. I only did it with the RC213V-S, which is another bike entirely. At least Crutchlow and the Marc VDS riders will be there, which is good for the electronics setup.”
On the Sachsenring Pedrosa has always been fast, but not today. Dani finished the day in 15th place, without wanting to take any risks.
“It was hard because of the cold and I struggled to find a good setup – he says – Some riders risked more, but I do not have good memories here, so I was a bit more careful than normal.”
Pedrosa crashed in Germany in 2014, injuring himself and kissing goodbye any chances for the Championship that season.
