SBK, Sykes beats the Ducatis at Laguna Seca

Win number five for the Kawasaki man who beat Giugliano and Davies to the line. The first DNF of the season for Johnny Rea

Sykes beats the Ducatis at Laguna Seca

The news of the day could be Tom Sykes' taking his 31st SBK win on board the lightening fast Kawasaki, or the double podium obtained by the Ducati duo Giugliano and Davies, in second and third but the most incredible thing is that today saw Rea suffer his first 'zero' of the season, having always finished his races and, more often than not, finishing them on the top step of the rostrum.

But things didn't go to plan for him in race two at Laguna Seca and after Rea's retirement it was left to Sykes, Giugliano and Davies to fight it out amongst themselves for the win, with Brit rider #66 just beating the Italian to the line and achieving his fifth win of the season, commenting: “I didn't know Rea hadn't finished the race. I'm pleased, because I didn't have the perfect setting yet I finish the weekend by taking a win before the summer break. We still have things to sort on the bike but we have time”.

The two Ducati riders were also pleased. After yesterday's double zero, being able to bounce back and fight for the win today will surely serve as a confidence boost before the holiday period during which many things, also in terms of the riders market, might happen. A strong Forés on the Panigale closed in fourth. Less happy with his performance was the “creature of Laguna” Hayden who was hoping for another podium after yesterday's success; he crossed the line fifth in front of Torres and Van Der Mark.

Iodaracing Aprilia did not have an easy time of it today, with the retirement of both Savadori and De Angelis, while Canepa closed eighth ahead of a very strong Anthony West with the privateer Pedercini ZX10 and Raffaele De Rosa in eleventh behind the Kawasaki of Roman Ramos and team Go Eleven.
