SBK, FP2: Davies and the Ducati pave the way

The Welshman closes 0.074 ahead of Rea,  Hayden third, Giugliano fourth, Savadori seventh, Canepa ninth

FP2: Davies and the Ducati pave the way

It proved to be a very tight battle right down to the very last second, but this time Chaz Davies came out on top. After settling for second place in the morning's session, the Ducati man set the bar in FP2, with a time of 1’23”662. This final push allowed the Welshman to knock Rea of the top spot.

Just 0.074 of a second stood between the Kawasaki man and the front, with the result confirming the potential of the ZX-10R at a track that last year saw the red bike reign supreme. Also in the battle for the top spots is Nicky Hayden. The local hero took a solid step forward after closing the earlier session eight tenths off the pace. Now the American's Honda is just over two tenths from the front (+0.244) with Tom Sykes chasing close behind.

#66 also makes a big jump forward after having closed FP1 in tenth place, finishing the afternoon session just 0.025 behind the Kentucky Kid. Davide Giugliano is also on the pace (+0.356), positioning the Ducati behind the Englishman, and ahead of Torres on the BMW (+0.400).

Laguna Seca is certainly not a simple track, but on his first visit here Lorenzo Savadori is definitely surprising people. The Italian concluded the afternoon session less than half a second from the front (+0.484), despite having suffered a crash at the Corkscrew soon into the practice.

Behind him is Fores on the Ducati followed by Niccolo Canepa and the Yamaha, ninth (+0.688). The Italian closes 0.023 ahead of the other R1, ridden by Lowes, the fastest in the morning. The Englishman suffered a fall in FP2 which forced him to wave the white flag. Alex De Angelis finishes outside the top ten, as does Leon Camier, who has nevertheless managed to resolve the MV Agusta's mechanical issues.

Thirteenth for van der Mark (+0.939), almost a second off the pace, and Raffaele De Rosa in fifteenth
