MotoGP, Lorenzo dominates, podium for Rossi and Vinales

Jorge moves into the championship lead at Le Mans, DNF for Marquez and the two Ducatis

Lorenzo dominates, podium for Rossi and Vinales

When he's like this, no-one can touch him. It's as if they designed the Le Mans track especially for him. Jorge Lorenzo was a straight as an arrow at the French track, hitting its target at the first attempt. If the Majorcan was looking to redeem himself after Jerez, he only needed a couple of laps to show his rivals what they were in for.

The Yamaha rider rode an impeccable race, building an advantage right from the outset to power towards his second win of the season. It's the eighth consecutive time that a rider has won from pole. His win is worth even more, as #99 now leads the way in the championship standings: “It was a very long race – stated Jorge -  I wanted to maintain a strong pace, staying inside 1’33. Crashes for Dovizioso and Marquez took some of the pressure off. I knew I could win, of course I'm pleased, particularly with the fact I'm now leading the championship”.

Behind him Valentino Rossi. Despite being seventh on the grid, the Doctor proved himself over race distance, making a memorable recovery. Once he'd freed himself of the Espagarò brothers, he also made light work of Dovizioso and Marquez : “The race was difficult, unfortunately the start left its mark – underlined #46 – but I had good pace, and was able to make up some positions. Jorge was faster and therefore impossible to reach. But I'm pleased because we've scored important points”.

There was celebration for Suzuki, scoring its first podium of the season with Maverick Vinales:We did a great job – he stated –the first laps were complicated but I didn't give up and continued to push. In the final stages, I held off Pedrosa, achieving a great result”.

Closing behind Pedrosa were Pol and Aleix Espargarò, seventh for Danilo Petrucci, who did well to hold off Barbera. Bradl and the Aprilia also in the top ten.

A day to forget for Ducati, with Iannone crashing out while lying second. The same outcome for Dovizioso, who ended his race at the same turn with Marquez, while fighting for the podium. The Spaniard was nevertheless able to get back on and close the race in twelfth position. But his championship advantage has gone up in smoke. The Honda rider is now five points from Lorenzo, Rossi 12.
