Sykes scores Superpole, Giugliano 3rd

The rain finally came to an end, with a few weak rays of sun making an appearance at the Assen track as Tom Sykes scores his 33rd career Superpole. The Kawasaki rider has no real rivals on the flying lap, setting a best of 1’35”440 and confirming his strong pace at the Dutch track.

It couldn't have gone better for the Brit, who closes six tenths ahead of Sylvain Guintoli (+0.633). Despite, the gap, the Yamaha has taken another step forward in qualifying, now it just needs to the same in the race. Davide Giugliano (+0.951) completes the front row. The Roman already proved in morning practice that he's keen to redeem himself in Holland, and this SP2 result is the second clue.

The Ducati man only just holds on to third however, a mere 0.01 of a second ahead of Johnny Rea. Something of a tough weekend for the current champ, dealing with an engine problem yesterday and still far from having the right feeling this morning.

Rea will line up on row two, alongside local hero van der Mark (+1.203), also struggling on his home track. A last gasp effort for Chaz Davies (+1.500), coming after a somewhat slow start yesterday.

German Reiterberger (+1.860) starts from seventh, getting the better of Fores on the Ducati by just 51 thousandths. Alongside the Spaniard is the other BMW of Torres (+1.973). Nicky Hayden's not having an easy time of it and is unable to do more than tenth, lying more than two seconds from poleman Sykes. Behind the American are Lorenzo Savadori (+2.147) and Alex Lowes (+2.774), who was fastest overall in FP2.
