SBK, Monza officially removed from the calendar

Unfortunately it's not an April Fool. The rumours were already circling and now it's official. The Monza World Superbike event will not go ahead. In a release circulated this morning, the FIM and DWO confirmed the cancellation of the Italian round from the 2016 WorldSBK calendar. The event was scheduled to take place at the Temple of Speed over the weekend of 22-24 July. The release also stated that: “With regard to the changes required in order to bring WorldSBK back to Monza, all parties involved have asked FIM and DWO for extra time in order to further analyse the project and evaluate its feasibility in the near future".

At the same time the possibility of seeing the Superbikes race at Vallelunga, in place of Monza, has been rejected “due to difficulties regarding scheduling and the required modifications”. The release also confirms that evaluation is still underway with regard to a possible replacement track, with a decision expected by 1 May. Among the various contenders, Estoril is the current frontrunner.
