Lorenzo: a win would have been better

Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:19 by Alice Margaria

Dreams can and do come true. Jorge Lorenzo was already a two time World Champion in the 250cc class, but today he realized a dream on a completely different level.

The Spaniard is the 2010 MotoGP World Champion, and he won the title by beating Valentino Rossi on the same bike.  It doesn't get much better than this.

"It's beautiful and immensely satisfying - Lorenzo said after the race - as satisfying as anything can possibly be.  My dream has come true, and now I just want to be alone for a few minutes and let it sink in that I am the World Champion."

Tell us about the race.

“I would have preferred to win of course, but third place is fine. My objective today was to secure the title, and that was more important than a race victory.  I got a good start from the pole, but it was hard to stay focused.  In the last laps Dovizioso was still too close, so I decided to put it on autopilot for the end of the race.  I don't want to sound presumptuous, but in normal conditions I could have fought for the win."

How did you feel as you crossed the finish line?

“It was just a huge relief from all the built up tension.  I still haven't checked my phone to see all the messages that I've received, but I'm sure there will be one from my father."

And how do you feel now?

“It's actually hard to understand.  You think about this moment, and you think you have imagined it in every possible way, but it is still somehow different.  It's hard to think right now, hard to understand anything, and even hard to speak.  So I'm trying to stay calm and not say anything crazy.  I am a lucky guy, I have a great bike, and I have splendid people around me.  I'm happy."

How would you describe this season?

“It started with an uphill climb.  In Qatar it was hard to ride with an injured right hand, but we finished second and that was very encouraging.  Jerez was a great race, in Spain, and the one that I liked the most... aside from almost drowning during the celebration!  And from there on we won seven more races.  Silverstone is where I rode the best.  And then there were more difficult moments, like at Aragon.  I could always count on support from Yamaha, who gave me a great bike, and we have progressed a lot during the season.  We need to enjoy this title and try to win as many races as possible, especially now that we can't lose the championship."

Would you like to dedicate this championship to anyone?

“To my father, to my mother, to my sister.  To my family in Majorca, and my family here at the races.  To everyone who has helped me get here:  Giampiero Sacchi, Dani Amatriain, Lin Jarvis.  I dedicate this title to Shoya Tomizawa... he was a great talent and unfortunately he couldn't realize his dream of becoming champion.  I also dedicate it to my fans; who love my attributes but also understand my shortcomings and defects."

Will you run with the number 1 on your bike next year?

“It depends on the livery we come up with.  If it looks good, yes, I think I will."

If this day were a song, what song would it be?

“I think the most appropriate song would be  – he takes a moment to think –  it would be “We are the Champions”.

And then he started to sing!
