Pernat: some changes can be made

Last week, at Indianapolis, 13 year old Peter Lenz was killed in an accident frighteningly similar to the one which took the life of Shoya Tomizawa at Misano. There is little that can be done about crashes of this nature, but Carlo Pernat (pictured with Giacomo Agostini and Giordano Capirossi), who has seen his fair share of GP races, urges caution against this recent uptick in fatalities.
"Two deaths in two weeks are too many - Pernat told GPone - maybe you are lucky and nothing happens for ten years, but two wheeled racing is dangerous and we all know this. Perhaps there is something that can be done, because you can't stand to see two young men dying like this. First of all, when they are making up the schedule they need to be careful about having two consecutive races like Indly and Misano, where you land on Tuesday and by Thursday you are already at a new track. Everyone working in the series is exhausted, and the riders have it even worse.
"This Moto2 series, with 40 rider grids, there are too many of them and they are too close together. We have already had bad accidents in several races. We have seen multiple rider crashes in the opening laps. Alex Debon could have been killed as well. There is no way to completely avoid fatalities, but we must not be setting ourselves up for them. We race on some tracks that are safe for maybe 30 riders... and when there is a crash you can never know what will happen."
