Smrz tests the BMW at Mugello

Wednesday, 09 June 2010 16:50 by Claudio Porrozzi

Taking advantage of the BMW test team's presence at Mugello, Jakub Smrz was able to ride the BMW S 1000 RR Superbike.

The German team has come to Mugello - as GPone.com reported - to compare two different chassis set ups that have been developed by Steve Martin, BMW's test rider.  Troy Corser was supposed to be testing today, but he will arrive tomorrow instead.

It was planned for Jakob Smrz to participate all along, and after getting to grips with the bike yesterday, he put in around 30 laps today.  The heat was extreme - with reports of 60 degrees Celsius on track surface - and the Czech rider's best lap was a 1'53".

"We threatened him - Davide Tardozzi told us - telling him not to take any chances: we need this bike for Troy tomorrow.  But the boy is good..."

As we reported last time, Team PATA B&G - formed by the merger of Guandalini and Borciani - is unsatisfied with the Ducati relationship and is in talks with Aprilia and, of course, BMW to change bikes as soon as a few races from now.  The decision should be taken shortly.

Team BMW Motorrad Superbike will then move on to Misano for further testing, along with other WSBK factory teams from Aprilia, Suzuki and Yamaha.

The Ducati teams (Xerox, Althea, ecc) will instead be testing during the WDW festivities on Saturday and Sunday, followed by an exclusive day on Monday.
