Jack Miller’s adventure in the Ducati factory team didn’t start out great. In the two races in Qatar, he had to settle for a couple of ninth places. In Portimao, he fell after five laps. A result that doesn’t make him very happy.
But the Australian rider isn’t the type to look for excuses: “I made a stupid mistake. I braked in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he explained his fall. “I was behind Aleix Espargarò. I lost my reference, but it was only my fault.”
Another wasted opportunity for Jack.
“I made another mistake before. I was too close to Mir at the first corner. I veered towards the curb and lost some time,” he said. “I tried to handle the situation, picked up my pace, and then made a stupid mistake that cost me dearly. I feel bad for myself and for the team.”
Since bad news always travels in pairs, when he arrived in the pits, he also made another discovery: he popped the stitches in the arm he had surgery on for compartment syndrome.
“I only noticed when I took off my suit. I have photos,” he smiled, showing the completely open wound on the screen of his mobile phone. “They stitched me up, and now my recovery will begin again. They banned me from motocross. I can only train with a bicycle.”
...and think about the next race, where he’ll try to make a change during this season.
“I have both speed and pace. It’s just about putting things together,” Jack explained. “We all want to win, but the reality is sometimes different. I’ve been in worse situations throughout my career and have always gotten out of them. In the end, it’s only been three races. I’ll work hard, and I’m lucky to have the support of my team. What could I have done? I don’t like to rationalize in a certain way. I fell too soon. Bagnaia had a fantastic race today. He was calm at the beginning, and this result is positive for him and the whole team. I want to go back to my performance at the end of last year. I know I can do better than this.”
