MotoGP, Marquez: At the San Donato corner I close the throttle too

Marc recounts: "I try to manage the risk, if you fall on that spot you risk missing two races. In 2013 it happened and I was lucky"

Marc Marquez has a positive finish to his first day at Mugello with a third place time, but the limelight was hogged by Michele Pirro’s spectacular crash. “Unfortunately, I didn’t see the replay – he explains – although I will so I can understand what happened but it was a difficult moment for everyone. It is a spot where you go very fast, despite being one of the most difficult and it is where I crashed in 2013. I was lucky on that occasion. Sometimes you get scared at that point even if the safety level is adequate, and every rider risks in his own way since if you close the throttle, the bike shakes. We were worried for Michele and I wish him all the best.”

The memory of his crash in 2013 at that same part of the track is still fresh, and Marc learned a lesson.

“I try to manage the risk. Obviously, during a flying lap where I push to the limit, I don’t think about it, but throughout the weekend, I play with the throttle, because if you crash there, you risk missing some races. Flattening the track in that spot could help. I asked in 2013, but it wasn’t done. We riders always try to go fast, thanks in part to the help of the winglets, but this way, the front shakes more. It is a dangerous spot, but each one of us tries to manage the risk in our own way.”

Speaking of technical aspects, Marc showed off a new saddle on the track that winds through the Tuscan hills.

“It is different, but it isn’t any big aerodynamic step forward. Tomorrow I’ll make a comparison, but I tried it in Barcelona and did not notice any particular differences. It just looks more like the saddle on a street bike.”
