SBK, Rea: "I couldn't fight with van der Mark"

Johnny reveals: "When he passed me and Tom, I knew it was impossible to catch him, but I'll try again in race 2"

SBK: Rea: "I couldn't fight with van der Mark"

His 60th career win is only postponed. Yes, because in race 1 at Donington, Johnny Rea had to settle for second place behind Michael van der Mark. There was nothing the Cannibal could do, losing precious tenths while fighting 'in-house' with Sykes, a battle that proved decisive when it came to the chequered flag.

Michael was unbeatable today, I had no cards to play, his Yamaha had a great set-up and I can only congratulate him on his first win in Superbike. I gave it all I had and couldn't do more than second”.

Rea analyses his performance.

“Michael was gaining a lot through the first sector and through the flowing sections, he made the difference there. I was fast through the final sector, and was making something up there, making the most of the hard braking. In the end, I struggled to keep pace with him, the tyre was sliding a lot and it was impossible to close the gap”.

The Kawasaki rider's mind is already on race 2, where he'll be chasing his 60th win in Superbike.

“I'll try again tomorrow, it won't be easy from the third row but I think have the right confidence with the bike and hope to take another step in the warm-up. As I said, today I couldn't do anything against Michael and when he passed Tom and me I realised it would be impossible to catch him."
