All you need to do is look at the statistics this season to see that Dovizioso on the second row does not represent a big problem. At Le Mans, he will start from the fifth spot on the grid, the same position he was in at Losail and, like in Qatar, he has the right pace to win in France too.
Dovi has gotten us accustomed to low-key statements and in Le Mans he made no exception, but satisfaction and serenity come through clearly in his words. His pace in free practice, no matter which type of tyre he was using, is further confirmation.
“In truth, we did opposite work compared to our rivals, so I was never on the track with the same tyres at the same time - he explains - This doesn’t let you do a direct comparison. Yesterday I concentrated on the soft tyre at the rear, today on the medium and hard, and I was fast with all of them.”
Rather fast, because Marquez said that he sees Andrea as the favourite.
“Not the favourite, but definitely one of the favourites - the Ducati rider rectifies - I say that because I saw Zarco as particularly strong and Marquez will certainly be in the game. There are also a lot of riders with a similar pace.”
A list of at least four names.
“Iannone, Petrucci and Viñales - he lists - Then there is Valentino, who doesn’t seem to have the pace to win, but he isn’t that far off either. The times in practice don’t tell the whole story. I am well aware that there are certain riders who come out in the race.”
Andrea is one of those who missed the front row, but it doesn’t bother him that much.
“It isn’t a big problem - he ensures - In qualifying, I could have done more and I realized that as I was riding. In the first half of the track I realize that I wasn’t fully exploiting my Ducati. I could have attacked the corners more.”
In spite of it all, Dovi remained among the leaders and that says a lot about how competitive he is.
“I have good sensations in the saddle. I must admit that it went better than expected - smiling - We had four sessions to work in and that removed quite a few doubts for me.”
