He set out with the bit between his teeth, just as he did one year ago. On that occasion though, he crashed out after just a few laps while this time around, Johann Zarco was fighting for the win until five laps from the finish. Once he lost the race lead, the Frenchman was sucked into the group, eventually having to settle for eighth place ahead of Andrea Iannone.

It was a great weekend. In qualifying I was confident with the bike and pole position confirmed my potential. I was able to start the race strong and manage it while keeping calm”.

The Frenchman proved he can set the pace.

I had good sensations. So I tried to manage the rear tyre to make the most of acceleration out of the corners. Seven laps from the end I wanted to make a break but a problem with the front tyre conditioned the rest of my race”.

Johann clarifies.

The tyre wasn't working correctly on the right side. I wasn't able to fight, even risking a crash. In the end, eighth place is definitely better than having to retire from the race”.
