MotoGP, Petrucci: The GP18 is competitive, it convinced me straight away

MotoGP: Petrucci: The GP18 is competitive, it convinced me straight away

On the second day of tests at Buriram, Danilo Petrucci also had the chance to try the new fairing flaunted yesterday by Dovizioso and Lorenzo. The latest upgrade from the manufacturer based in Borgo Panigale put a smile on the Italian’s face, but at the same time left him with some doubts. So, better to wait for the Qatar test to have a clearer view of the situation.

“We need to work well on this latest evolution – the Italian began – I don’t know if we will continue using the integral fairing or not. We will probably continue with the intermediate, leaving the other for Qatar. This is an atypical track – he added – I am partially satisfied because we did a lot of tests and we are able to be competitive.”

One thing is certain: with the new Ducati, it was love at first sight.

The GP18 convinced me straight away – he pointed out – Obviously, I don’t have a comparison with the GP17, but I am not really that interested in having one. The new Ducati works. We need to work on the setup, as well as on the tyres, since this is a particular track and Michelin met us halfway by providing various alternatives.”

Danilo then goes into detail.

There is no doubt that the GP18 is competitive, but we need to understand the potential over race distance – warned the Pramac rider – The tyre is an encouraging aspect, as it shows great consistency and withstands wear well.”

Danilo then goes back to analysing the fairing

With the intermediate version I felt better – he reiterated – The positive aspect is that I have greater stability at the front and I brake hard. Unfortunately, I struggle too much in terms of speed on the straight, so we need to find the right balance and I think the Qatar test will be the ideal place to quell those doubts – he added – since Losail has different turns, both flowing and demanding.”

The aerodynamic upgrade was defined by Dovizioso as smart. This is a term that Petrucci agrees on.

“I say the same thing and I would even add ‘better’, but we need to wait for Losail to decide which direction to take.

In the meantime, Danilo’s work at Buriram continues nonstop.

“I also have the frame to test – he reminded – Maybe tomorrow, although it is up to the team to decide when to use it. Unfortunately, the work on the fairing takes a lot of time since we need to change all the settings.”
